Voyageur Canoe Tours
The voyageurs were Frenchmen who engaged in the transporting of furs by canoe during the fur trade years. Voyageur is a French word, meaning “traveler” and canoe means “a narrow, keelless boat with pointed ends, propelled by a paddle or paddles” – but you most likely knew that! Anyway, we have 2 voyageur canoes that your family or work group can rent for a time, and they even come with a sternman – “a person who sits at the stern or rear of the boat”. That sternman will have some history of the river and some details about what you see along the way to share with you, as well as help you navigate the river safely. Don’t think he’ll do all the paddling for you, though! This is a many hands make for light work situation!
If this is brand new for you, keeping the trip to an hour and a half makes the most sense. Up to 7 people are able to fit in each canoe, depending on how much you want to stretch out your legs. Usually at least 5 are needed to make sure the boat is stable.
Tours leave from Kimberly’s Sunset Park, travel south toward the College Avenue Bridge and back. How far we get depends on the wind and current of the day, but we promise very pretty scenery, and can almost guarantee that you will forget you are in the city.
1 Voyageur Canoe with Guide for 90 minutes: $190
2 Voyageur Canoes with 2 Guides for 90 minutes: $300
Other routes are available upon request. An extra transportation charge may apply depending on distance from Kimberly.
Please book at least 2 weeks in advance. We need this time to make sure we have everything in place so your small-group adventure is nothing but enjoyable.
The Heritage Parkway is able to offer this great opportunity for public due to a generous grant from the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region.
