Day 7: Berlin to Buttes des Morts

A leisurely Sunday morning breakfast- boats are
loaded and we are off by 9am. 2 pots of coffee are
the definition of leisure. We make the first 5 miles in
65 minutes thanks to a tail wind and strong current.
Lunch is at the boat landing in Omro where everyone
in town is fishing. We are camped in the backyard of
a kind lifelong resident of the Buttes des Morts area.
It is a kindness we will try to repay! What we share
with this fellow and his wife is an appreciation for
the river. It reminds me of what Abbey Metzger says
in her book Meander Scars, “If you get on a river
enough, the self you’ve come to know on the water
spills into your daily life.”

Inspirational Indeed, thanks for the “river philosophy”. Way too many boats sit stored in the garage waiting for an occasional use. We boat owners need to get out more, just like these heritage paddlers are proving, life is richer on the river. Stan Hayes would be proud.
