Volunteers needed to assist with first Locktender House Rental Rennovation
How would you like to paddle the entire distance of the Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway; paddle up to one of the historic locktender houses, stop and spend the night and paddle on the next morning?
The Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway is in the early stages of renovating the locktender houses along the Fox River to make them available for nightly rentals to paddlers. This concept is based on similar projects across the country, such as the back-country hut system in Colorado, known as the 10th Mountain Division Huts. This rental system will enable paddlers to travel for a few days or even a week as they wind their way through the entire river system.
This project coincides with a recent study by the Fox River Navigational System Authority (FRNSA) regarding the adaptive reuse of the DePere Fox River Lock. This study is available on FRNSA’s website.
Every journey begins with a single step, and we are looking for volunteers who would like to help with the renovation of the first house. Individuals skilled in carpentry, electrical wiring, painting and anyone else who is willing to lend a hand is welcome. Volunteers will have the first opportunity to rent the houses before they become available to the public this summer.
