Lock House at Little Chute

_DSC0117_1Do you have interest in stepping back in time for a day, a weekend, a week? Do you remember the comfort and warmth of Grandma’s house when you were young? Or the way you wish Grandma’s house would feel? We are working to recreate that wonderful place, if Grandma was married to a lockmaster, that is.

The lock house, situated right along the historic canal system which was built to house hand-operated locks in the late 1800s, was the residence of the men and their families who worked this system. The lockmasters made sure that navigation happened day and night, keeping commerce moving forward. They were an important part of the prosperity which grew along this hard working waterway.

Image51Little Chute Guard Lock House was constructed in 1909 on Mill Street in Little Chute, a small Dutch Village in the Fox Cities area of Northeastern Wisconsin. It is a 1-1/2 story, Colonial Revival style home which has been waiting to be brought back to life. The Parkway is fortunate to have great area volunteers who are adopting this structure, and taking a little piece of ownership for themselves. They give hours and sweat equity and soon their affection for this house begins to grow. We believe the same will be true for friends who come to rent the house once it is completed. The comfort and warmth of this home is here – already – and will surely be even more enhanced with all the love pouring into it during this renovation.

The home, once completed will be furnished with period antiques, clawfoot bathtub, and a 1930s kitchen complete with 1930 refrigerator, hoosier cabinet and farm house sink. The kitchen will be equipped with modern conveniences as an apartment stove with oven, coffee maker, microwave and toaster to allow the convenience of preparing food while vacationing.

Another wonderful feature is that the house sits adjacent to part of the Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Trail.

Once open, will be available to rent year round.

    More Information:

We are almost completely finished with the restoration process. The home needed a lot of work. The exterior of the house is in very nice shape due to the state agency in charge of the lock system putting much work into it in 2010.
The interior, however, was a victim of water damage and mold. Modern plumbing and electrical systems have been installed. All of the wood, window and door trim and floors have been restored to their original condition. Lock House at Little Chute is truly a warm inviting home to vacation.
The distinctive nature of this home and its riverfront location makes it a unique destination.

    Hours of Operation:

We are busy furnishing the home with period 1930s furniture and treasures to make your stay a true walk back into time.

Expected opening date: June 1, 2016
